About the Perfect Pear
I am a certified nutrition and wellness coach. As a nutrition coach, I coach people one-on-one or in a group on how to live a nutritious life. Under the wellness branch of my practice, I am a group fitness instructor and a mindset instructor. I am passionate about helping others create a positive mindset about nutrition and exercise, as well as guiding others to find clarity in any number of areas in their lives where they may feel stuck.
About Mary
After a career as a lawyer, I stayed home to raise my three children. As I neared the end of my role as a stay-at-home mom, I became a certified nutrition and wellness coach through Nutritious Life Studio, and an ACE certified group fitness instructor. After taking a Clarity Catalyst course for coaches (a state-of-the-art program based on a Stanford University master’s degree course for fostering creativity and emotional intelligence), I found the transformative course so helpful that I decided to become an instructor of Clarity Catalyst.
WHAT I DO:
I use simple lifestyle changes to guide others to create a better relationship with food. I also help people change their mindsets to achieve their nutritional and exercise goals, and to find clarity to move forward in other areas of their lives (such as: career, relationships, or lifestyle habits).
Why I am a Nutrition and Wellness Coach:
When my youngest child was in high school, I knew that my role as stay-at-home mom was nearing an end. I began considering what I wanted my future to look like. I enjoyed my time as a mom guiding and, in a sense, coaching my children. My volunteer work as a running coach and as a reading tutor gave me great fulfilment. I knew that my next role needed to be in the capacity as a coach, a guide, or a teacher.
Why nutrition and wellness?
Up until I was in my 20’s, I was a very picky eater and I never gave much thought to the enjoyment or nourishment that a good meal can bring. When I was a new mom, I took up running and felt that as long as I was running, I could eat whatever I wanted. The older I got, I realized eating whatever I wanted wasn’t maintainable – I was gaining weight and not adequately fueling my body. To combat the weight gain, I tried restricting calories but I could barely make it through a week because I was hungry and irritable ALL of the time. I also tried a low-carb diet but it was not sustainable. One piece of “forbidden” food and I was spiraling down a path to again eating whatever I wanted and gaining all the weight back that I had lost, and then some. All those months of deprivation – what a waste! I started focusing on my eating habits and began reading about nutrition. What I discovered fascinated me and I wanted to learn more. So, I enrolled in a course to become a nutrition and wellness coach. It wasn’t until I took this course that I began to fully appreciate what my body needed, to change my relationship with food, and to create a positive body image centered not on a number on the scale, but on how I felt: energized, in-control, and happy! I knew that I wanted to share this information with others and provide guidance to them. Becoming a nutrition coach made perfect sense and is a terrific pairing of my interest in nutrition and my coaching skills. Becoming a group fitness instructor goes hand-in-hand with nutrition coaching because exercise is a key pillar in living a nutritious life. Likewise, as a Clarity Catalyst mindset instructor, I help people identify and change negative mindsets to better meet their nutrition and exercise goals, as well as their overall wellness goals. As a mindset instructor, I guide people to realize the areas in their lives where they feel stagnant and I provide them with a clear path to move forward.
At middle age, I feel the best I have ever felt; I don’t stress about food intake; I don’t think about calories; and I make empowered and intuitive decisions about what to eat. I know that exercise is a key component to a nutritious life but that it doesn’t have to mean running marathons or spending hours at a time at a gym. I also know how to change my mindset to help me reach all of my goals and to bounce back quickly when I get into a rut in any area of my life. If any part of my story resonates with you, if you are tired of deprivation diets, if you want to develop a healthier relationship with food and exercise, or if you want clarity on any area in your life where you feel stuck or aren’t living in a meaningful and engaged way, I can help you.
Why the name Perfect Pear?
Several years ago, my sister and I were on a trip together and she purchased a pear at a produce stand. She bit into the pear, and with simple joy, exclaimed, “this is the best pear I’ve ever tasted!” I never forgot how that small bite of a piece of food brought her so much happiness. Have you ever bitten into a pear, or any piece of fruit, that is at the exact stage of ripeness – the flavor is bursting, the texture is neither too hard nor too soft – it is simply perfect?
What was the feeling you experienced at that first bite - excitement, happiness, or hope that the rest of the piece of fruit would be as delicious as that first bite? Excited, hopeful, and happy is how I want you to feel about the journey you are about to begin. Together we can set you on a lifelong path of celebrating delicious food, nourishing your body, and living your healthiest and most meaningful life!
